Tea & Talk with Collector Mike KaplanSaturday, Feb 01, 2014 Lundring Events Center | Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 | 2-4 pmFilm producer, poster design director, and collector Mike Kaplan will discuss the vintage movie posters on display in Gotta Dance! The Art of the Dance Movie Poster from the Mike Kaplan Collection. In his career as a producer (The Whales of August, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead), director and distributor, Kaplan has collaborated on poster campaigns with artists including David Hockney, Don Bachardy, Allen Jones, John Van Hamersveld, and André Carrilho. He frequently worked with British airbrush artist Philip Castle, including on a poster for Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange that was voted the All-Time Best Film Poster by patrons of England’s Odeon Cinema Circuit. The lecture will begin at 2 pm in the Lundring Events Center (directly across from the William Rolland Gallery). Following the presentation, guests will be invited to join Kaplan on a guided tour of the exhibit and refreshments will be served. Admission is free, no reservations required. | |
Vive la France!Friday, Jan 31, 2014 Tours in French kick off a season of foreign language tours at the William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art Friday, January 31, 2014 | 10:30 am-3:30 pmBrush up on your French by joining CLU French classes and community members as they are toured around the exhibition Gotta Dance! The Art of the Dance Movie Poster from the Mike Kaplan Collection in French. To begin, visitors will receive a worksheet with simple phrases and questions in French that will help stimulate and refresh their conversation skills as they view the gallery individually before each tour begins. Next, CLU French students with near-native fluency will lead discussions of several posters, allowing a dialogue in English and French depending on the visitor’s preference. Tours will be geared toward students with an elementary through advanced understanding of French, so all levels of French enthusiasts are welcome and encouraged. Tours will begin at the following intervals: 10:30 am, 11:45 am, 1:00 pm, and 2:15 pm* (* denotes more advanced French class). Refreshments will be served throughout the day. The program includes music from select films represented in the GOTTA DANCE! exhibition, including “An American in Paris,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” and others. In addition, Rubin will share selections from her new memoir, “Do You Dream in Color? Insights From a Girl Without Sight,” that touches on her complex relationship with the color spectrum and chronicles her rise from a blind musical prodigy to an accomplished international opera singer. |
