Sept. 16th is Mexican Independence Day, or Grito de Dolores, and in conjunction with artist Sonya Fe’s Mexican-American-themed mural on display in the gallery, historical and philological expert Xóchitl Flores-Marcial will lecture about the indigenous roots of Mexico’s history as they pertain to several key political figures represented in the mural. Did you know Emiliano Zapata spoke Nahuatl, or that President Benito Juaréz was Zapotec? Attend to learn more! Flores-Marcial is a guest scholar at the Getty Research Institute and has taught at UCLA, Santa Monica College, Cal States L.A. and Northridge, and Loyola Marymount University. Opening remarks will be given by Dr. Eva Ramirez of the Department of Languages and Cultures.
Come celebrate the holiday with us in style! The lecture will take place in the Lundring Events Center and a reception will follow in the Rolland Gallery. Currently on display is the exhibition The Beautiful: Contemporary Images of America, featuring a collection of photographs, paintings, sketches and digital images garnered from across the country.
